Epic Games Development Alumni Announce Upcoming Rhythmic Dungeon Crawler
There's a pretty good chance that you're familiar with Epic Games, the studio that brought us Fortnite, Gears of War, and the Unreal Engine directly responsible for high-fidelity experiences on PC, console, mobile, VR and AR platforms. It also speeds up the creation of games, applications, visualizations and cinematic content. You may not realize it, but it's quietly present in our current modern gaming experience. In short, Epic Games is a giant in the gaming industry and their technology is a vital part of much of the gaming and media we partake in. So, when former Epic developers and developers at Drastic Games announced an upcoming title, I was immediately curious.
The upcoming project, titled Soundfall , is described as a "music-driven action adventure", and is developed with Unreal Engine 4 by a small team of talented developers. Their goal is to combine music and gaming in a way that transcends the usual game/soundtrack experience. A soundtrack can certainly make or break a game, but Soundfall utilizes music and rhythm in a whole new way. “Soundfall is an extraordinary project to be part of,” said Julian Trutmann, content director, Drastic Games. “Music connects people in ways that are difficult to articulate. It’s been an incredible pleasure working with such an emotionally engaging medium.”
“Syncing literally everything in the game to music has been an awesome technical challenge,” added Nick Cooper, technical director, Drastic Games. “But it’s been a tremendously rewarding process, and we’re excited to finally share Soundfall with players.”
From Drastic Games:
"A lively mix of twin-stick shooting and rhythm-based gameplay, Soundfall follows the journey of Melody, a young audiophile who finds herself transported to the world of Symphonia. In search of a way home from this mysterious land where music comes to life, she becomes entangled in a conflict to save the realm from Discord, an unfathomable darkness that threatens everything.
From Symphonia’s lush environments to its outlandish creatures, music drives every aspect of this rhythmic dungeon crawler. Become immersed in a world shaped by sound while delving into forbidden dungeons, exploring fantastic landscapes, and uncovering the hidden power of song.
Soundfall’s levels, enemies, loot, and more are procedurally-generated by and dynamically react to a range of musical elements, changing not only from song to song but measure to measure as tunes build and die away. Battles synchronize to the beat, rewarding players who dash and slash in time to the beat with impressive dance-like combos."
Players search the landscape for gear and loot that includes unique weapons and legendary artifacts, all with a musical aspect. There is a wide variety of playable characters, each with their own plan and musical style. Soundfall will offer compelling solo play but features multiple play modes — both couch co-op and online team play will be available.
All the various pieces appear to be coming together, so let's hope this game is as exciting, action-packed, and brilliant as it sounds. Soundfall will be playable at PAX West, EGX, and PAX Australia later this year. It's set to release for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2019.
